UPS Address Validation API is an easy-to-integrate service that helps you validate shipping addresses on the front end of your website or application. This helps minimize costly delays and returns caused by customer typos and invalid addresses. It also helps you reduce the cost of shipping by optimizing your deliveries.
UPS is a shipping company, so it’s no surprise that its address validation API was designed to check a customer’s street address in order to get packages to them quickly. However, this isn’t a complete solution, as it doesn’t verify suite numbers or apartment numbers and is unable to detect PO Boxes.
In addition, its API only provides validation at the street level and does not validate against the USPS database or provide standardized addresses. It’s also not very fast, only providing 1.4 lookups per second and only supporting addresses in the United States. Finally, it’s not open source and requires a user ID, password, and license key to use.
Smarty is a great alternative to UPS’s API, as it is hyper-accurate, supports multiple data sources, and provides a variety of additional tools. It also allows for batch processing, data blending, and transformation, as well as being certified by the Coding Accuracy Support System (CASS).
